I have also purchased horses with and without the PPE. We have not purchased horses with serious health concerns indicated by the PPE that have gone on to long and successful show careers. We have also purchased horses with clean exams that have developed leg problems within a year of purchase. It's good to have the information, especially if it's a high dollar horse, but it has to be considered in light of the horse's intended use. Great articles! I have really enjoyed your site.

Excellent article. I've done both as well. PPE on my OTTB, even with the ridiculously low price and beautifully free movement.

No PPE on a backyard horse I knew was sound and could be brought easily to fitness. Both were good decisions.

Older horses would make me do a double take on PPE's even if I'd known/ridden them for awhile, probably want to have a thorough one no matter what.

OTTB had controllable health issues, but even if he had come out clean, I don't regret the money spent.

I haven't done a PPE on any horses I've bought. In both cases I was knew I was taking a risk, but felt good about the situation. Both situations turned out fine. I definately keep the possibility of a PPE in mind when buying, but it's not a hard and fast rule for me. That being said, I've never bought a horse that has already done a whole lot. If I bought an experienced endurance horse, for example, I would probably have a PPE done just to evaluate the amount of wear and tear on it.
