I guess the only good news here is that it's only the Police Horses in the City of Boston that are affected. I believe that the mounted patrols in the suburban areas (such as Walden Pond) are still operational.

No! No! Please don't go! With over 130 years of American history, it would be a real shame to lose the Boston mounted police. The mounted police are simply dashing in their uniforms and equestrian clothing, not to mention a formidable tool in the control of street crime. As anyone who works with horses knows, being confronted with a confident, well trained horse ridden by a skilled rider can make you move out of the way much faster than any motorcycle cop pointing you to the curb! Hopefully, the funds will be raised to keep this piece of American history alive.

I read this in the paper and was so sad. There are so many things amounted unit can do that just can't be accomplished by guys in cars.

The respect garnered by dignified men on horseback cannot be matched. It's much harder to look dignified eating donuts and drinking coffee while on horseback.
