PSA – Surgeon General releases health warning on horse hair.

Urgent Notice: Potential Danger of Horse Hair

This is a public service announcement. In a press release today, the National Institute of Health has announced the discovery of a potentially dangerous substance in the hair of horses. This substance, called “amobacter equuii” has been linked with the following symptoms in female humans:

  • reluctance to cook
  • reluctance to perform house work
  • reluctance to wear anything but boots
  • reluctance to work except in support of a horsephysical craving for contact with horses (may be an addiction).

Beware! If you come in contact with a female human infected by this substance, be prepared to talk about horses for hours on end.

Surgeon General’s Warning: Horses are expensive, addictive, and may impair the ability to use common sense.

Overstuffing should be reserved for sofas.

When you get a new saddle you assume that it will come out of the box with the wool flocking soft and pliant, ready to mold to the shape of your horse’s back.

Unfortunately, that’s not always the case. It seems like some manufacturers stuff so much wool into those panels that they are hard as rocks! I’ve also gotten new saddles that were overflocked on one side (a saddle fitter once told me that in the “old days” it was fairly common for saddle manufacturers to overflock the left panel because they thought that the pressure applied from mounting would cause the left panel to compress.)

This saddle was pivoting on Van's back.

When Gary Severson fit this horse, it became obvious that the saddle had two much stuffing right in the middle so that the saddle pivoted on his back. Van had been bucking quite a bit under saddle and it’s very likely that his ill-fitting saddle was bothering him.

The answer? Gary removed the extra flocking — two handfuls of it!

Gary took out two handfuls of wook flocking from Van's saddle.

After the adjustment, the saddle fit very well. Moral of the story? You should have a saddle fitter check the fit of every saddle — new or used — so they can help make sure the saddle fits. Don’t assume that just because a saddle is new, it will fit your horse.

Van's saddle now fits. Gary points to the area that was previously overflocked.

Rachel Alexandra beats the boys by 6 lengths

Rachel Alexandra pulled off a definitive win in the 1.25 million Haskell Invitational today, beating Summer Bird, Papa Clem, Munnings, Atomic Rain, Bunker Hill and Duke of Mischief by six lengths. All colts. I guess this proves that the Preakness wasn’t a fluke and her Vanity Fair shoot didn’t go to her head.

She runs a beautiful race. Despite the sloppy conditions she was just a hair under the track record. Jockey Calvin Borel continues to say she’s the greatest horse he’s ever ridden and there are a lot of people who agree. Standing in the crowd were people holding signs that read “Run like a girl!”.
