Um, no. Here's the deal. I submit that anyone who thinks this is hunky-dory should be required to dive from that exact same height head first ... no arms extended ... into a pool of water. As a kid I made the horrible mistake of diving head first off a 1.5-story cliff. It felt like I hit cement even though I was able to extend my hands to break the water. I can't imagine what it would have felt like had I not stuck my arms out in front of my head. In this case the horse's head breaks the water for the rider, but they don't have a choice in the matter. So everyone who thinks this sort of entertainment is just peachy should be required to do that dive with their hands tied behind their back first. (Sans horse) Then they can give their vote.

The diving horses are an interesting historical event, however, I hope that the advocates are able to fight the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority and help them to find other ways to promote their business. Horses (and humans) jumping off platforms into pools for amusement just doesn't make a lot of sense and is not worth the risk.

I love that pony!

I had thought the kid was obviously terrified until some responses on the COTH forums made me think about it again. Maybe the force of the pony's jump was unexpected and led to that, or he was out of breath from being late on the course or something. Seeing it as clearly, obviously, fear, was me projecting my own thoughts about jumping! (Strangely, I did well jumping as a kid... just never liked it, and without depth perception decided as an adult that I have no reason to push my limits when I don't know where jumps ARE!)

"He's got his game face on." Hee hee. He certainly does. That's what I thought when I looked at the boy, and then the pony. Boy is terrified, pony is totally focused, so neatly tucked under. Boy seems to be balanced, even if he is foot is danger...Great photo. :))

It's funny which bits stay with you. I've also bought and sold a lot of them over the years. When bits cost so darn much, I've never seen the need to hold onto the really expensive ones that didn't work.

I have an ancient full cheek slow twist also. Mine is a bristol, the horse I had at the time did not go well in a single joint snaffle. I sell and give away bits all the time and I haven't used this one in a very long time, but I will not part with it; it is a proven bit with slightly reinforced brake power. It is the middle ground between a severe leverage bit and a simple snaffle. Good post!
