Romantic girl with a guitar

Romantic Girl with Guitar
This lovely old postcard is from the early 1900s. I love the romance and the staging. Back in the 1900-1910 era it appears to have been quite common to dress in costume and pose with your horse. Maybe that should make a comeback? I know several people who might really enjoy that!

Hand tinting was also very popular back than. Not surprisingly, the tinting was done primarily by women who did complex cards in an assembly line — each person was responsible for a color. Sadly, there was a downside: the women typically cleaned their brushes by putting them in their mouths and the lead in the paint slowly poisoned them.

This is one of the images that I have made available at Le Cheval Nouveau as a greeting card or postcard.

Postcards from the Past

Back in the “Golden Age” of postcards, the early 1920s, real photo cards were all the rage. I’ve found that there was a real trend in having women pose in romantic, flowing dresses with their horses . . . or sometimes with their husbands or boyfriends. They are quite lovely images, especially the ones that are hand tinted! And they show that women have always loved horses.

I’ve been collecting these old postcards for awhile and am so intrigued by these images that I’m contemplating having them made into modern postcards or greeting cards. What do all of you think?

This young woman looks lovely in her flowing green dress with her two horses.

Couple on Bench

How many couples did this horse watch on this bench? He looks fairly practiced at it.

This young girl carrying her hat by the strings in one hand is one of my favorites.

One of the things I like about these old postcards is the theatre -- check out her dress and headscarf.

The romance of horses in the early 20th century

vintage postcard girl with green dressRecently I started collecting real photo postcards from the early 1900s. But not just any postcards — romantic postcards that feature women, horses and occasionally men.

In these cards, the women are dressed in beautiful gowns, often holding flowers or a fancy hat — which may be hand tinted to add some color.

They have faraway looks in their eyes. The horse adds an element of luxury, an indication of class and wealth. But it all boils down to the fact that women have always loved horses.
