While Zenyatta may have come up a head short in the Breeder’s Cup Classic, Goldikova made history yesterday by winning her third consecutive Breeder’s Cup Mile.

While Goldikova does not have the same name recognition as Zenyatta here in the US, in Europe, this mare is a rock star. Bred in Ireland, 5-year old Goldikova is trained in France. In 2008 she was a finalist for the Eclipse Award’s American Champion Female Turf Horse. In 2009, she was named French Champion Older Horse, European Champion Older Horse, and American Champion Female Turf Horse.

What makes Goldikova’s success so impressive is that she regularly runs against the boys. While Zenyatta has run only twice in mixed fields, Goldikova has won 8 out of 11 starts in races against males. All told, she owns 15 wins out of 21 career starts and has only finished off the board once.

Here’s an interview with her trainer, Freddy Head:

The 2010 Breeder’s Cup Mile may well be this great mare’s last race, so enjoy!
