A foxhunting pioneer!

This is Mrs. Gertrude Rives Potts riding sidesaddle, clearing a jump at the 1914 Capital City Horse Show in Washington.
Aside from her performances in the show ring, Mrs. Potts became the first woman in America to be recognized as a master of foxhounds by the Master of Foxhounds Association. At Castle Hill, her estate in Albemarle County, Va., she imported and trained a pack of English Foxhounds, bred and schooled her own horses, organized a hunting staff, and enlisted the consent of neighboring landowners to form a suitable country for the “Castle Hill Hounds.” Photo from the Library of Congress.
