It’s almost Derby time! Untapable wins the Oaks

Great racing at Churchill Downs today, warming up the racing crowds for tomorrow’s Kentucky Derby.

The two big races for the day were the Kentucky Oaks and the Alysheba Stakes.

Untapable, ridden by Rosie Napravnik, fulfilled expectations winning the $600,000 Kentucky Oaks handily. Untapable has been compared to Rachel Alexandra, who also raced in the Oaks rather than the Derby. And like Rachel Alexandra, there are rumors that she is heading next to the Preakness.

If there were no surprises in the Oaks, the Alysheba stakes featured a surprise win by Moonshine Mullin, a 6 year old colt who last year was claimed for $40,000. Today, under the capable guidance of Calvin “Bo-rail” Borel, the 6-year old won the $300,000 stakes race by a half a length over Golden Ticket.
