At the same time that eventers were glued to the USEF’s coverage of Rolex, the Kentucky Horse Park hosted another big event — the 2015 Kentucky Reining Cup. The ride shown above by 22-year old Laura Sumrall and her horse Wimpy Top Model, won the 2015 Freestyle Reining Championship — which seems to be the Western equivalent of the dressage freestyle. Laura is the senior captain of the Texas A&M University women’s equestrian team. Her “Frozen” inspired routine was performed to the Disney hit “Let it Go.”

Although I know nothing about reining, I can certainly appreciate the performance and the evident bond between Laura and her horse. Even more impressive is the fact that she had never practiced the routine on her horse before the performance. What an amazing partnership they have. I don’t know many people who could pull that off.

In the AQHA journal she says:

I’m at school at Texas A&M, so I wasn’t in the same place as my horse, so practicing was a little challenging. I set out a pattern and ran it  on a couple of different horses.  It was really fun to put together … definitely a group effort: my mom came up with the concept and did all the handiwork on my costume.”
