And it rained. And rained. And rained some more.

Rain filled feed bowl

It started to rain last night. When I fed the horses this morning it was bone chilling, with sheets of rain falling and the win blowing. Supposedly it was 38 degrees, but it felt a lot colder. I fed extra hay and felt badly when I drove off, thinking not just of the horses but of the runners who were starting the Boston Marathon. It was a miserable day to run 26.2 miles (as if there is ever a good day to run that far!)

When I fed the horses this afternoon, the rain was still coming down in buckets, although it was now in the 40s. The horses were looking bedraggled and their sheets dripped with water. Thankfully, they were pretty dry underneath and none were shivering. I wasn’t looking forward to trying to change their blankets as I’m still not very steady on my feet and the mud is now pastern-deep, but thankfully said blankets are still pretty waterproof. Their feed bowls were almost completely full of water. What a spring this has been in New England! I guess I can say a small prayer of thanks that it wasn’t snow.

  1. This “Spring” in New England has been really discouraging. I’ve been really struggling trying to find the motivation to get out to the barn and ride. It’s been 6 weeks of lower than average temps, grey skies and snow/rain. Every week I try to give myself a pep talk and say the end is near, good weather must be right around the corner.

    1. Indeed! I went to watch the first cast for the first hunt of the season. It was bitterly cold this morning with the wind blowing. My guess is we’ll be dropped right into summer. I miss Spring!

  2. Raining and 38? Yikes, that’s miserable. There’s no type of weather I hate more than rain at cold temps. Two years ago we moved from Dayton OH to Durham NC and are very happy with the weather down here, though we too have not really had a spring. But I’ll take any day this spring over 38 and raining…
