Rachel Alexandra wins the Lady’s Secret in 103 degree heat

It was not a day when I would have considered riding my horse — and it was so hot that Delaware Park and Philadelphia Park canceled racing. But Rachel Alexandra went on to win the Lady’s Secret Stakes at Monmouth park by three lengths. It would have been hard for the track to cancel given that they had moved the race to July 24th from August 1st and had increased the purse from $150,000 to $400,000 to accommodate Jess Jackson.

It wasn’t a great race (her competition was less than stellar) but in those conditions there was no need for her to blow the competition away. Let’s just hope that running out in front is the first step back toward the winning form shw showed last year.
