Yup, Zenyatta did it again with another breath holding finish as she came from last around the far turn and passed her four rivals. Three-year old Switch made a game effort but in the last quarter, Zenyatta showed her speed and won the Lady’s Secret Stakes for the third year in a a row. She now has a 19-0 record and has won nearly $6.5 million.
Zenyatta’s racing style seems to maximize suspense as she often seems to just swoop down in the last second to take the lead. According to jockey Mike Smith,
What can I say, she is what she is,” he continued. “She just seems to know where the wire is and she likes to make it a little dramatic. It is just incredible. To be honest with you I try not to get too caught up into it because it’s just too emotional.”
Zenyatta’s next — and final — race will be the Breeders Cup, on November 16th where she will defend her win in 2009.
I may have to wait to watch that race on YouTube. With her running style and the very serious competition she’ll face from colts like Quality Road and Lookin at Lucky, it’s going to be as exciting as the Belmont Stakes in a Triple Crown year.
Even though you KNOW she’s going to win, it’s heart-stopping to watch her. What an amazing horse! But if I were her jockey, I’d be a nervous wreck!
