Nice workout for Zenyatta yesterday in her last workout before the Breeder’s cup. She looks very fit and fluid. Make sure you listen to the commentary after the workout as it’s very educational.
To keep her attention for the workout, Zenyatta raced two of her stablemates, Sarbonne and El Vino, but neither one of them ran the entire workout — instead, they tag teamed her. Sarbonne was the backstretch pacesetter, beginning the workout 5 1/2 furlongs from the finish three lengths in front of Zenyatta.
When Sarbonne and Zenyatta passed the five-furlong pole, El Vino was guided from the outside of the track to the rail and was in full stride when Sarbonne caught up at the half-mile pole. Sarbonne and El Vino led by about four lengths on the turn, when Sarbonne began to lose touch. Zenyatta, racing down the middle of the track, caught El Vino and the two ran together through the stretch with Zenyatta finishing a sixteenth of a mile past the wire a neck in front.
To keep her fresh, they often work Zenyatta well past the wire so she doesn’t anticipate when to stop.
