Richard Spooner takes it to a whole new level at Spruce Meadows. When his horse got in wrong to the combination, he drops the reins and lets the horse sort himself out. I don’t know if I would have the presence of mind in such a situation (over appropriately sized fences for me). I’d probably be grabbing mane or eating dirt.
We did this all the time growing up in lessons. It’s amazing watching the horse figure it out while you stay balanced. At the end of the day, it’s their job to get over the fence not ours:) Amazing video!
While I LOVED no stirrups, no reins, closed eye gymnastics… I give it a 90% probability that in this specific situation I would have both let go of the reins… and the saddle. In his case it was clearly intentional, and just well done!
