Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens picked up the reins in January again after retiring seven years ago. The 50 year old jockey turned commentator turned jockey hired a personal trainer and dietician, lost 19 pounds and started winning again. He picked up his first win just six days into his revamped career. Now he’s riding Oxbow, a D. Wayne Lucas horse in the Derby. Will he make this his fourth Derby Win?
It will be a tough race for him. The track is sloppy. Oxbow’s last start at the Arkansas Derby was a disaster and he’s running from post position #2 — the last horse that one from that position was Affirmed in 1978.
But he’s certainly the sentimental favorite!
