American Pharoah’s sidekick Smokey

American_Pharoah_June_3_credit_Chelsea_DurandBehind every great racehorse is his or her companion. And American Pharoah is no exception. His buddy is Smokey, a Quarter Horse gelding.

Having looked at some photos of Halter horses today — and wondering why people are still breeding HYPP positive horses — Smokey is a stunner. Seriously, this horse is so handsome they will need to make a Breyer model of him.

Smokey, or This Whiz Shines, is more than just a side kick. The six year old buckskin gelding had a competition career of his own before joining the Baffert barn, competing at the National Reining Horse Association’s 2012 NRHA Futurity. He has some pretty impressive moves.

Smokey and American Pharoah
Smokey travels with American Pharoah but obviously isn’t intimidated by the Triple Crown winner — at least when it comes to food.

Baffert apparently has a soft spot for Quarter Horses as he got his start racing them. He’s bought several horses from Smokey’s breeder and claims Smokey is the barn favorite — and the intended mount for his 10 year old son.
