The US Show Jumping Team became the first US team to win the gold show jumping medal at the World Equestrian Games, which was even more exciting given the North Carolina location. Going into the finals tied with Sweden, all four riders from both teams had to compete, and it came down to time after three from each nation went clear. There was no plan B for McLain Ward and Clinta: they had to go clear and they had to go fast. When the 11-year old mare cleared the final fence in just 32.58 seconds the medal was theirs.
The U.S. gold medal winning team included McLain Ward, Adrienne Sternlicht, Laura Kraut and Devin Ryan. Coincidentally, three out of the four rode greys. McLain Ward on Clinta, Kraut on Zeremonie and Ryan on Eddie Blue.
Sweden took the Silver and Germany won the Bronze.
Ward is currently standing in fifth place for the individual competition; Germany’s Simone Blum is currently in the lead. The jump off is on Sunday.
