A glorious ride in the snow

Yesterday it was perfect for riding. There was about a foot of snow on the ground that’s still light and fluffy and the weather was mild — nearly 30 degrees. Much of the snow was still pristine. Big open fields full of untouched, virgin snow.  There’s something so delicious about being the first person to ride across it!

Freedom was feeling very good. I hadn’t ridden in almost a week. Note to self: it is not a good idea to try to control such an enthusiastic horse with a hackamore with a leather curb strap after not riding him for a week. Today my arms ache from holding him back but it was absolutely worth it.

I only wish I’d had my camera.

  1. I remember Elmer! I was at NCW in 1980, but went to Saddle Straddle in ’81. I have a picture of him somewhere. I am sure that’s him—he went with us on our pack trip. Those are my best memories of my youth!
