Great post on Horse Junkies United, especially in the light of New York State’s expanded helmet law!

I know lots of people who don’t wear helmets and have heard a lot of excuses: it’s too hot, it’s uncomfortable, my horse is safe, I’m not jumping, we never wore them growing up and we’re all fine, etc.

I’ve had a bad fall or two at the walk, well we were walking until my horse tripped and fell down. At the spook, I believe we were walking before we flew five feet to the left to avoid the deer that jumped out of the woods, and at various other gaits over the years. Sure, a few of them were when I was jumping. One of my worst accidents was in the barn. I wasn’t even mounted! And yes, I now wear my helmet when I tack up.
