The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse

For all of us Charlie Mackesy fans, the new short film based on The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse book is a must see.

The short film, which debuted on Apple TV on Christmas Day, features an award-winning cast of actors, including Tom Hollander as ‘the mole’, Idris Elba OBE as ‘the fox’, Gabriel Byrne as ‘the horse’ and Jude Coward Nicoll as ‘the boy’. Apple TV is $6.99 but offers a 7-day free trial.

“The journey of making the film of The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse with my ridiculously talented and kind animation team has been a magical one. It’s so great to think the story will be in the nation’s homes this Christmas – and I really hope it helps bring comfort, love and laughter.”

The movie was released on December 25th

Charley Mackesy first posted his series of drawings on Instagram for his friends, he said. “It was never meant to be a book originally. We decided to try it and were quite surprised by the response to it.” The book has since sold more than eight million copies worldwide. And I still follow him on Instagram.

The film took two years to create and Mackesy said it was “a thrill” to see his characters moving on film.

“I do remember when the boy first moved I just screamed and ran around the garden,” he said.

“Seeing it all come together with the sound, movement, colour and vision – I hope people like it.”

  1. Whoa. I don’t get Apple TV…heck, I’m lucky to get a signal for the regular TV channels (NBC, etc). I love to see a horse properly drawn in animations.
Maybe someday it will be available for people like me.

    1. Hopefully it will end up on YouTube. I don’t get Apple TV either, but I’ll sign up for a trial just to watch it. I’ve always loved Charlie Mackesy’s drawings.
